But it is dying...

But it is dying...

Below is a guest post I wrote for Arthur Pledger.

Internet marketing is a term that gets thrown around very loosely these days. Anybody with a blog can in a sense call themselves by the above title. But calling yourself by a title and filling the shoes of the title are completely different things.

Initially I was like most when I started my blog, I did not know much and was pretty much learning as I went along. That was fine until I actually learned what I was doing and better yet doing wrong. After taking a couple trips around the blogosphere I really began to notice the missed opportunities my blog had.

Problem With Adsense

Adsense may not be dead, but it is defiantly dying. Not so much adsense, but the ability to make decent profit off adsense. Here is the problem, most bloggers rubric that they set there blog to looks like this: Post relative content and add Google adsense. With that setup there unless you are pulling in roughly 5,000+ unique views daily then you are probably not making much money at all. The first thing we as internet marketers have to realize is the old business plan of “post content and Google ads” alone is an out-dated method to monetize your blog.

Also think about this, most blogs try to generate as much organic (search engine) traffic as possible. Let’s assume a visitor comes to your site via Google, then clicks one of your Google ads, they are then taken away to another site and may never return to yours. This shows the flaw in simply relying on adsense to monetize a site. One shot deals like that are not how you build a community.

Capture The Lead

Capturing the lead is the first step to successfully building a community and establishing yourself as an authority. What this means is when a person comes to your site you need some method to capture their email. Yes email…. RSS, Twitter, Friend Feed, etc … are all secondary to this. By capturing the email you can build a strong newsletter and build your trust with the reader. Capturing the lead also makes it much easier to get return readers rather than one time hits.

The best software available for email marketing is by far AWeber. AWeber has many features that make it standout among the rest but I will talk about the two which I enjoy the most: the blog broadcast and lightbox hover.

Blog Broadcast

The blog broadcast is a pretty handy feature. What it does is pull a pre-defined number of posts from your RSS and compiles a newsletter out of them. I have mine set so that after every 10 new posts it automatically sends a message out to my list with that information. Once it is set up it runs completely by itself.

Lightbox Hover

This is the name for the type of advertising I have on my homepage. What it does is after a few seconds a sign up box appears over the whole screen advertising my newsletter. It only does this on the first time a person visits the site. Having side opt-in forms are fine but will not do the job alone. It actually takes putting it right in front of the readers face for them to respond. The results will speak for themselves. Before adding the lightbox hover I only had 15 members sign up on my list over a period of 4 months. After adding it to 3 of my sites I have a total of 63 members within the first month and get at least 4 signups per day.

The service cost $19/month but is well worth the investment. I have multiple lists on multiple sites and still only pay the $19/month and if you are using it right it will pay for itself. The amount of money that could be made from effective email marketing far exceeds that of solely using Google adsense. It can be set to run fully automated allowing you to continue to focus on your site rather all the bells that make it work. For more information or to sign-up on AWeber follow the link below.
